What is yoga sadhana?

Yoga sadhana
means the practice of yoga - what is your practice?

Hatha yoga mainly tends to concern itself with techniques relating to asana and pranayama along with various preliminary cleansing techniques (kriyas). Raja yoga is mostly the yoga of meditation. A rounded approach to your yoga practice should ideally encompass both the techniques of the body and the mind. They are not separate; in order to arrive at a state of meditative absorption your body and breath need to be free from tension; in order for your asanas to be steady and comfortable the mind needs to be focused and self-aware.

Other things to consider are:

                                  Where do you practice?
                                  How often do you practice?
Do you have a regular teacher/guru?
What type of practice do you want?
What do you think you need?

What is Yoga?

Yoga is a journey, beginning with asana (posture). The function of Yoga asana is to free the body from its habitual patterns of tension in order that it may reach a state of deep relaxation. In this state it is possible to release the mind from its attachment to the never-ending stream of experiences through which we perceive the world. This is Yoga.

Yoga is essentially a spiritual practice. However, in order for the mind and spirit to be receptive to the state of harmony which is our natural birthright, we have to address our body in which our mind and spirit apparently reside. Through the use of yoga asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques) and simple stillness this is possible. Your very first class will give you a glimpse of this possibility and from there you will progress to feeling more 'in your body' as well as experiencing a greater clarity of mind. Respect, tuning-in to and nurturing our bodies is essential in this sedentary and psychological age. Yoga provides a gymnasium for the body and for the mind. And all you need is a mat and to allow yourself to arrive on it.
